AMC Review |
 |
Many of you may know that we are going to be reviewed by the Australian Medical Council in August 2008, as a follow-up to the college accreditation process initiated in 2004. The current review is to see how much progress the various college departments have made in addressing areas identified by the AMC in 2004 as requiring further work.
The Faculty committees ably assisted by David Goddard are working very hard to put things in place and we would appreciate regional lists of training meetings and other educational events. We are also seeking training sites from each of the regions that can be visited by the AMC team in the second week of August. If you can help, please contact the Faculty soon!

AFOEM Education Project Officer |
 |
We are delighted to announce Dr David Goddard has just joined us as AFOEM Education Project Officer, for a period of 2 years. Those of you who already know David will confirm how perfect he will be in this role.
David Goddard has had a long and varied career in Occupational Medicine, being Fellow of the Faculty since its inaugration in 1994, and member of ACOM before that. Since 1990, David has been Senior Lecturer at the Department of Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine at Monash University.
In an earlier life, David worked with with Victorian Railways, State Department of Labour and WorkCare. However teaching has been David’s abiding passion, culminating with Monash University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2001. David was spontaneously nominated for this award by his medical undergraduate class who cited his “enthusiasm and ability to make a dull subject interesting” as being major reasons for the nomination.
Although David has written extensive material to aid the studies of undergraduate and post graduate students in occupational medicine and public health, he has given an enormous of time to the Faculty in preparing over fifty OSCE stations over the last 14 years, and helping faculty trainees prepare for the Fellowship Exam. David has also contributed to many medical journals, and was the principal author of Workers Compensation Reform, an early publication of the former Australian College of Occupational Medicine, now the Faculty.
In 2004, David spent seven weeks at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa where he facilitated a group of ten medical students with varied cultural backgrounds for problem-based learning.
David’s next challenge will be to review the AFOEM post-graduate education, curriculum and training processes and develop and initiate an educational strategic plan in liaison with the Faculty Education Committee and the RACP Deanery; and to assist in the development and delivery of training and assessment materials. We look forward to working with him, and see this as a huge step forward for the AFOEM training program.
